Located on the banks of the Golden Horn in Balat, Sveti Stefan Church—also known as the Bulgarian Iron Church—is a rare architectural gem made almost entirely of prefabricated cast iron. Completed in 1898, it was shipped in pieces from Vienna and assembled in Istanbul, making it one of the few surviving iron churches in the world.
With its ornate neo-Gothic and Baroque design, gleaming façade, and richly decorated interior, the church symbolizes the spiritual and cultural presence of the Bulgarian Orthodox community in Istanbul. Even from the outside, its striking silhouette and historical aura make it an unforgettable sight as you pass by.
